No time for black magic and adventure
At our recent mid-year meetings, I was reminded yet again just how excruciating it can be to make tough decisions about product roadmap. These discussions are typically some of our company’s most heated, and many dynamics combine to make the setting of product direction difficult. But the most challenging issue by far is guarding against Feature Creep. I’ve come to believe over time (to paraphrase the Apostle Paul) that “Feature Creep…is the root of all evil.”

What’s yours is mine?
I was just reading this Q&A with an associate professor from University of Texas at Austin, about how social media has changed the relationships between students, professors and administrators. One question towards the end of the interview made me thankful that Facebook didn’t exist as I started my freshman year of college:

In Defense of Millennials
It’s back to school time again and I was excited to see that Beloit College’s Mindset list is out. The list is intended to give professors a better idea of where their students are coming from and it’s a fun read; but I can’t help but read it and think it’s a bit of a cynical portrayal of incoming college freshmen. In a USA Today article, one of the creators of the list, Ron Nief says these students associate Watergate with Monica Lewinsky rather than Nixon- a claim that I have trouble believing. I also scanned through some of the comments to the article which were filled with comments like “they think history starts from the day they were born” and “they don’t read books anymore because they’re too busy on Facebook.”

HBCUs Dealing with Financial Crisis
While most educational institutions have been hard hit by the recession, few have felt the burden more than historically black colleges and universities. Context Collapse
As my generation starts to jump on the Twitter bandwagon, about 40% of my friends now have an active account. The ones who Twitter are just as quick to defend their new addictions as the non-Twitterers are to put it down- it seems to be a topic that no one remains dispassionate about. Yesterday, I walked to the farmers market with a non-Twitterer who brought up the outages on Twitter and Facebook that occurred a few days ago. She didn’t understand how so many people could be upset about it, “What did these people do last year? Twitter isn’t that old!”
